Twenty-one residents live in six homes - Miller Houses I and II, Levy House, Todd House, the Lois W. Toub House and the Katherine and Herbert Bauer House - in residential neighborhoods in North Dallas. CHAI provides an atmosphere where residents can progress toward achieving their full potential. CHAI provides residents with support and assistance in health care, social and leisure activities, daily living skills, and transportation. Residents are also assisted with obtaining and maintaining jobs in the community.
Miller House, located in north Dallas near Royal Lane, was the first of CHAI's three group homes to open. In March of 1984 the first resident moved into Miller House. Miller's residents enjoy serving as hosts to families and community members at Friday night Shabbat dinners. In 2009, Miller House was reconfigured into Miller I and Miller II, with a semi-independent living (SIL) pilot program in Miller House II. Semi-independent living residents have keys to their home, take public transportation to their jobs or volunteer positions, and have staff at the home in the evenings to help with budgeting, cooking, and other life skills.
Levy House, located in north Dallas near Meandering Way, opened in 1987; the first two residents moved into Levy House in June of that year. Levy's residents are very active in the Texas Advocates group. They also bowl regularly with the ARC of Dallas and participate in many Special Olympics and community events. Assisted living residents in Levy House receive 24-hour support from staff.
Todd House, located in north Dallas near Arapaho, was the third CHAI home to open. The first resident moved into Todd House in July of 1998. Residents participate in Special Olympics competitions and frequent activities such as swimming and participate in a theater group at the Aaron Family JCC. The residents of Todd House have created a band, are avid Cowboys fans, and frequently host guests in their home.
In 2010, CHAI expanded residential capacity by 25%, from 18 to 24 residents, with the opening of the Lois W. Toub and Katherine and Herbert Bauer houses. The Katherine and Herbert Bauer House is a semi-independent living facility, and the Lois W. Toub house has 24-hour staff supervision. The residents of CHAI’s newest group homes are enjoying participating in community events, CHAI parties and activities, and spending time at the nearby Jewish Community Center.
